It’s a new year and a new you! Could it be time for NEW interior designs in your home, too?
As designers ring in the New Year with the trendy must-have design features for 2015, you may be surprised to learn what’s hot, and what’s not. Zillow Digs has released its list of the top trends in home design for this year. Instead of exploring new design territory, the trends for 2015 are recycled trends from years past! As they say in design and fashion, what goes around comes around.
Wallpaper
Among the newly recycled trends that have returned for another shot at fame is wallpaper. You may have just cringed. We did. Wallpaper definitely has a bad interior design stigma attached to it, but designers are out to change that and insist that the use of wallpaper in controlled, smaller doses is exactly what your accent walls need. Wallpaper brings depth and texture to a room with designs that would be hard to recreate with paint.
As evidence of the resurgence of wallpaper, did you know that Graham & Brown has designated an inaugural Wallpaper of the Year for 2015? The choice is Northern Rose Blue/Pink. Graham & Brown, a company based in the United Kingdom, describes it as “vibrant pink and explosive blue with lush embellishments.” It definitely has the British, vintage charm that they were aiming for. With the right furniture pieces, we think this wallpaper could definitely add character and an air of distinguished charm to any room.
Gold fixtures
Just like our jewelry tastes have returned to gold and rose gold after being narrowly focused on silver and platinum bling for years, we’ve progressed from only wanting stainless steel, chrome, and nickel faucets and fixtures in our home, too. Most recently, homeowners chose the gorgeous oil-rubbed bronze fixtures for a different look, and now they are moving toward a bold new era of gold fixtures.
We do love the new gold fixtures and faucets that are bright and sleek and that don’t scream the 1980s like the fixtures that were so popular 30 years ago. But please, do not stray too far and go back to the 80’s bronze. We cannot return to that trend!
Mid-Century Modern elements
Many people have long appreciated the style of mid-century modern design, so it is exciting to hear that it is now one of the hot trends of 2015. This return to retro may have been inspired by the hit TV show Mad Men, and for that, we are thankful. Mid-century modern combines a minimalistic design with an appreciation for nostalgia. And, if you shop for antique pieces, you can even say you are making a “green” design choice. This is a win-win!
Cowhide
What can we say about cowhide besides, “Yes, yes, yes!” How fun is this print and texture for accent pieces in your newly designed space, whether it be in the form of an area rug, throw pillows, or one really moo-ving piece of furniture? We caution that cowhide should be used sparingly, in small doses, throughout the room, as a complement to the overall design.
According to Zillow Digs, there are a few trends that should be laid to rest this year.
Chevron print
Get away from the chevron slowly and no one will get hurt. Apparently, we’ve overdone chevron and designers think it’s time to take a little breather.
Matching furniture
We remember being young college students and dreaming of the day when we could afford a matching living room set. But, alas, that dream is no more. Designers are adamant that “matchy-matchy” is out, and instead, we should look for eclectic, multi-era décor to fill our newly designed rooms in 2015.
Solid painted accent walls
Again, wallpaper is moving in and making these bold, painted accent walls a thing of the past. That was so 2014.
Bright colors
On the chopping block are coral, purple, and teal. Instead, consider blue as an accent color. Designers say it’s a perfect complement to Marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year.
We have to step in and defend the color of coral, however. A few weeks ago, we blogged about the Sherwin Williams Color of the Year, which if you remember, was “Coral Reef.” This just goes to show that designers can’t even agree amongst themselves on design trends.
So, we want to know, which design trend would you say is a must-have for your home in 2015?
We can provide you with an endless list of reasons why you should buy a home. If you are renting, you should buy a home so that you can have more space, personalize your space, paint your walls, park in a garage, have a backyard, take advantage of tax savings, etc. The list is endless. If you already own a home but are considering a move, we can provide myriad reasons to make the change as well. A new home can provide you with an updated open floor plan, easier for entertaining. Maybe you need more bedrooms. Maybe you need less space to maintain. Perhaps you want to live closer to work, or closer to loved ones. A new home can provide exactly what you are looking for. Whether you are a renter or a homeowner, here are 3 reasons why 2015 is the time to BUY a NEW HOME.
