As they say, Virginia is for Lovers. We think you’ll love all that our community of Castleton offers its homeowners, from wish-list upgrades and modern, open floorplans, to the amenities of the surrounding area that give residents the escape of the great outdoors, and the convenience of being in a travel hub. Let’s peek inside what it’s like to be At Home in Castleton!
If you ask the post office, Castleton is located in Henrico, Virginia, but locals refer to the area as Varina. Regardless of the name, the area boasts lower than the national average cost of living and averages only eight snow days a year! If you are relocating to the area, you may be puzzled by the horseshoe shape of Henrico, which curves around the north of the city of Richmond. There’s a simple explanation: Henrico is the name used by the U.S. Postal Service for the unincorporated areas of Henrico County.
If you are a history buff, you’ll be in your prime here. Henrico County is one of the oldest counties in the United States. Dating back to 1634, Henrico County was named after Citie of Henricus and was one of the eight original Shires of Virginia. Varina was the county seat back then.
Henrico County was the scene of several American Civil War battle sites and is the home to Curles Neck Farm, a 5,600-acre property that is included on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is a working, private farm that sits on the north side of the James River.
For the travelers among us, Henrico County boasts both the Richmond International Airport and an Amtrak passenger station. Even closer than the Henrico County Amtrak station is the Main Street Train Station in Richmond, which also offers Amtrak service. Motorists have the advantage of the interstate system which weaves through the county including interstates 54, 95, 195, and 295. Our homeowners especially have quick and easy access to the airport and Interstate 295 and Highway 895, which provides a quick connection to Interstate 95.
For the trivia buffs, Henrico County is one of two counties in the state that maintains its roads. And, of course, for the motorsports lovers out there, the county is also the location of the Richmond International Raceway, which hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races each year!
And it doesn’t stop there- there’s so much more to love about our conveniently located Castleton. Outdoor enthusiasts will escape to the nearby Dorey Park and Recreation Center and Four Mile Creek Park. Dorey Park is home to a popular one-acre off-leash dog park, 18-hole disc golf course, horseback ring and trails, pond (which is stocked annually with channel catfish), playground, picnic and pavilion area, and trails.
Speaking of trails, both Dorey Park and Four Mile Creek are connected to the Virginia Capital Trail! If you are not familiar with this paved pedestrian and bicycle trail, it spans 52 miles and brings hikers closer to nature and 400 years of history.
Boaters are not far from Deep Bottom Park, which offers two boat ramps into the James River. There is also a nearby canoe launch onto Four Mile Creek.
We know that there are barbeque lovers among us! For those of you who love this southern smoked delicacy like us, there’s Ronnie’s BBQ less than two miles from Castleton. This place is a family-built business that is a favorite of locals. But the news is spreading. Ronnie’s has been featured on Food Network, The View, and Style Weekly. This is a must-visit for all barbeque fans!
For families and book lovers, and those eight snowy days a year on average, there’s also the new Varina Area Library. This impressive $28 million, 43,885-square-foot facility offers many amenities like a digital media lab, demonstration kitchen, study rooms, and classes that are sure to draw in folks of all interests. It will even offer a trail that connects to the Virginia Capital Trail.

To all of our friends (near and far), we wanted to take a moment and share this letter from our owner, Clark Stewart, to our team! We hope this encouraging note will give you a true glimpse into the culture of our company. We’re all so thankful to be working for a family-owned business that celebrates our achievements, both company-wide and individually. During this time of Thanksgiving, we are so grateful to be a part of our Eastwood family!
The Corriher family recently moved into their new Eastwood Home in Walnut Creek. During the build, they relied on a new app being used by our team that allowed them to stay up to date on the progress of their home while they were living five hours away.
The Richmond Division of Eastwood Homes is pleased to support a local Petersburg veteran by donating a newly built ramp to improve mobility. Last month, Channel 12 On Your Side featured 74-year-old widow and Army veteran, Rowena Carter, reporting on her battle to leave her own home each day. Due to poor leg circulation and an injured knee, Carter struggled to walk up and down her own porch steps. Her fellow veterans in the Richmond area called 12 On Your Side to share her struggles with the community and request help on her behalf. The Richmond team of Eastwood Homes caught wind of the request and jumped at the opportunity to support the Petersburg veteran.
