Welcome to the heart of the Palmetto State, where history, culture, and vibrant community seamlessly blend in the charming city of Columbia, South Carolina.
Columbia's affectionate nickname has a few different believed origins… It's said that "Soda City," traces its roots back to the early 1900s when Coca-Cola established its bottling plant within the city and some even say that this nickname came about from local merchants selling refreshing sodas along Main Street. While the soda stands have evolved quite a bit, the spirit of community endures within Soda City. It’s also rumored that locals would refer to Columbia as “COLA” in short which was naturally associated with Coca-Cola. The city's culture continues to run thick through the streets, bustling with energy, diversity, and a delightful blend of traditions old and new.
Soda City Market
What began in 2005 with 6 vendors and a little over 200 customers now takes over several blocks on Main Street with an average of 150 vendors each week and over 400 unique vendors throughout the year. One of the modern-day traditions that embodies this vibrant spirit, the Soda City Market, held every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. This market is the heartbeat of our community, where locals and visitors alike gather to experience the best of Columbia. Nestled in the historic downtown district, this market transforms the streets into a bustling event, offering an eclectic array of farm-fresh produce, artisanal crafts, delectable treats, and live entertainment. It's not just a market; it's a celebration of local talent, culinary delights, and the essence of Columbia's unique character as every item sold must be grown or created by the vendor (excluding exotic fruits, vintage items, and a few other things). A delightful tradition that locals have made a part of their weekend routine and an enticing attraction for tourism.
Columbia's vibrant atmosphere, rich history, and dynamic community make it a prime location for those looking to settle in a place that values both heritage and progress. Whether you're strolling through the Soda City Market or exploring the city's historic landmarks, Columbia invites you to savor its distinctive flavors and create lasting memories in the heart of South Carolina.
