At the start of the new year, everyone seems to go out and make new years resolutions. Really, they’re just goals we set out to get a fresh start. Whether it be to work out more, eat healthily, start a new hobby, or anything else you can think of, these resolutions give us a path to a “better us.” So why don’t we set similar goals for our homes?
Whether you just bought a new home in one of our seven markets, or you’ve been in your home for years, you can set some new years resolution goals for your home! Here are some of our suggestions to make your house a “better home.”
Organizing- do your spring cleaning early! Why not donate that shirt you haven’t worn in years or that dish you got as a wedding present that just keeps collecting dust? Organizing and de-cluttering your home of unneeded things will truly give your home that clean feeling! You’ll feel instantly better too; you’ll know where everything is and maybe you’ll even find something you’ve been looking for.
Safety First- Your home may be de-cluttered now but is it up to date with the latest safety technology? Make sure all your smoke detectors are the some of the latest versions that check for multiple forms of smoke and carbon monoxide.
Consider purchasing a video camera-enabled doorbell. For around $100, you can ensure that no one is intruding through your front door, plus it will give you access to let friends and family in while you’re away!
Keep It Simple- Want to lower that energy bill? Well, we’ll keep it simple for you! Ensure you have all energy-efficient light bulbs in your home, and turn off any unnecessary lights or fans when not in use. Remember when your mom always yelled from across the house, “Turn off your bedroom light.”
Another way to save on energy costs is to have a smart thermostat in your home. One you can program by the time of day to keep it warm while you’re away at work, and cooler for when you get home.
Weekly Workout- How often do you clean your home? We’ve heard it all, from every 3 days to every 2 weeks. We recommend giving your home a scrub down at least once a week. We like to call this the Weekly Workout. Get to scrubbing! Whether it be dividing up the household chores, or tackling one a day, this will help keep your home fresh, clean, and in good shape, if you ever want to resell it!
One of our pro tips is to focus on one aspect of cleaning at a time. If you are working on windows, do all the windows in the house before going on to your next task. This should save you time from going back and forth with supplies.
Have Fun- Has your couch or coffee table been in the same spot for months or even years? Try rearranging the furniture- you’ll be amazed at how different the room will look!
Give it a fresh look with some new plants, because greenery is always a good idea. Haven’t changed out those photos in years? Invest $10 in printing new photos at your local store to showcase all the great things you did in 2018. You’d be surprised at what a difference it will make to have small updates around your home!
Whatever your home resolution is, we hope you crush it!
