Our country was built up on the backs of strong workers, and Labor Day is a day to celebrate and honor those achievements made by the American worker. This holiday marks the last big hoorah for the summer and is often carried out with a cookout in the backyard. But we are hardworking Americans, so there are probably some projects getting completed this weekend, too. After all, we do have a three-day weekend!
In honor of our long holiday weekend, we’d like to suggest some ideas for quick and easy DIY home improvement projects that can be completed in one day or less. We’ll include the links to more thorough instructions, too!
Update those finishing touches – Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference, and that is true for kitchen cabinet knobs and pulls. If you want to freshen up your kitchen, consider updating or upgrading your hardware! There are so many different finishes and designs available, that you’ll probably spend a few hours just picking out the perfect choice. Another super easy and fast update is your light switch plates and outlet covers. Most people have standard white or off-white plates and covers, but just like knobs and pulls, there are many options available today. Updating those to a finish to match the rest of your home’s hardware can really tie a design together. They are not that expensive, and this DIY project takes mere minutes!
De-stress with pressure – If you haven’t used a pressure washer, yet, you are really missing out. This piece of home-maintenance machinery brings with it great satisfaction in the form of clean siding, gutters, fences, and sidewalks. We suggest putting in some earbuds and giving the outside of your home a facelift. Now, if cleaning the inside of the house was as easy!
Weatherstripping the storm – Maybe it’s just us, but this is one of those tasks that we know we need to complete but haven’t yet! Or maybe you aren’t sure if you actually need to add any weather stripping? Here’s how you can tell: With a partner, stand outside your exterior door with a flashlight with your friend inside the closed door. Turn off the lights and shine the flashlight around the perimeter of the door. If your friend can see light, you need weather stripping. Or, try sliding a dollar bill between the door and door jamb on the locked side. If it fits, weather stripping can help. For your windows, simply wet your hand with water and run your hand around the casing. The moisture on your hand helps you detect drafts. If you can feel the draft, add weather stripping! There are plenty of different types of weather stripping including adhesive-backed foam for around doors and windows. Or it’s possible you may need a new door threshold.
At the carpet wash – Okay, we can’t lie, this one isn’t as fun (in our opinions) as using a pressure washer, but it can be just as rewarding once you finish! On average, it only takes about 20 minutes to shampoo a carpet, so you could have three rooms done in one hour! And this is one of those jobs that is pretty straightforward – no safety gear needed! Simply rent a machine from a nearby store, and you are that much closer to making your (expensive) carpets bright and fresh again. There really is some satisfaction in seeing just how dirty that carpet shampooer water is, and therefore how clean your carpets are now!
